Description:
"On Friday November 11, 1997, we drove sixty miles from Hattiesburg to Gulfport, Mississippi, to turn ourselves in to police at Harrison County Jail just north of the city -- to be booked, fingerprinted processed on a charge of felony conspiracy in a supposed plan to bilk a casino at the blackjack table ...We were two brothers who made our livings as writers and university professors. We had been gambling at the Mississippi coast casinos -- "the boats, " as the locals called them -- at a fairly frenetic pace for about two years, losing in an honest, forthright sort of way most of what we had inherited from our recently dead parents. The loss of our mother and father in our own middle age was a greater shock than might seem natural, because the family was an unnaturally large factor in our psychological arithmetic. The family had always been the key to our values and our standing, while the rest of the world seemed chaotic and disheartening, if often amusing and informative."
